Metrotvnews.com,
North Rhine-Westphalia: Chancellor Angela Merkel sent a severe blow to her main
rival on Sunday, May 14, 2017, four months before the election, victory in
Germany's most populous state.
The
Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is projected to win 34.3 percent of the vote
in North Rhine-Westphalia, the state-run Social Democratic Party (SPD) for
decades.

percent, dropping sharply from 39.1 percent in 2012. This is a serious defeat
ahead of Germany's national elections in September.
SPD Deputy
Chief Ralf Stegner called the defeat a "very dark day," but insisted
it was not over yet.
"The
SPD is receiving a severe blow, but it can still stand," he said, as
quoted by AFP.
With 13.1
million registered voters, North Rhine-Westphalia became the most important
state in the German elections. This regional election is crucial because it is
the last event before the national elections.
"We
will head for national elections confidently," said one CDU official,
Michael Grosse-Broemer.
The defeat
in North Rhine-Westphalia dimmed Martin Schulz's hopes of replacing Merkel as
chancellor. Victory will smooth Merkel's resolve to the fourth period.
